Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced that its Ras Al Khor Street Improvement and International City Entrances project is 83% complete, CWO reports. 

Ras Al Khor Street was formerly known as Al Awir Street, and the overall project is being implemented by RTA in collaboration with International City’s master developer, Nakheel. 

The scheme follows a traffic impact study implemented for International City and the recently expanded Dragon Mart retail hub. 

Phase 2 of the scheme is due to open in March 2019, and includes improvements to Al Manama Street, and the widening of junctions such as the extension of Al Manama-Al Warsan 1 Street, previously called Nouakchott St; Al Manama Street-Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road; and the International City-Al Manama Streets. 

HE Mattar Al Tayer, director general and chairman of RTA’s board of executive directors, added: “Improvements of junctions also include the construction of bridges and signalised junctions enabling movement in all directions.”

Improvement work on Al Manama Street-Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road will see the flyover above the latter road widened to raise capacity from 4,500 vehicles per hour to 6,000 vehicles.

The current number of one lane each from Ras Al Khor Street to Sharjah, and from International City to Jebel Ali and Abu Dhabi, will increase to two. Additionally, slipway capacity will double from 800 to 16,00 vehicles per hour. 

Al Manama Street will be widened between Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and the entrance of the International City from three to six lanes in each direction, which will raise capacity by 1,500 vehicles per hour per direction.

From the entrance of International City to Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan St, Al Manama Street will be expanded to include five, instead of the current two, lanes in each direction. This operation will raise street capacity to 7,500 vehicles per hour – a significant growth over the current hourly volume of 3,000 vehicles. 

Phase 1 of the RTA scheme opened in July 2018, with its scope including, among other operations, the construction of a two-lane flyover between Warsan 1 and Ras Al Khor Street, as well as the development of u-turns from Ras Al Khor Street to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, according to Dubai Media Office.
